Drumsticks are amazing. Whether you are using the leaves or the pods. This vegetable comes with plenty of marvellous health benefits. They should call it a super-vegetable.

What is Drumstick?

The word drumstick can mean many things. It’s not the chicken drumstick. Not the drumstick you use when playing music. This is a vegetable called drumstick, you probably figured it out from the title. It looks thin and very long. Inside is covered in a jelly-like flesh with triangularly shaped seed-pods. The drumstick leaves can also be consumed and full of nutritious just like the vegetable.

I was introduced to this vegetable at a very young age. As a picky eater, as usual, I would avoid it as much possible. To me, it looked like fingers when cooked. My mom is smart to feed me instead of letting me eat on my own. Eventually, I got used to the taste and kind of ended up liking it.

I find it fun to have it because the outer layer of the drumstick is hard and we only eat the insides of it. The only way I know how to is by biting into the drumstick piece halfway to crush it first. Then use the teeth to scrape off the flesh and the flavours while you pull the hard skin off then discard the rest.

Ingredients

  • 3 Drumsticks slice into 4-6 cm length
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 small Onion sliced
  • Curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup Tamarind water
  • 1 & 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1 Green chilli sliced
  • 1/4 cup Coconut milk
  • Salt as needed

Instructions

  1. First, wash the drumsticks and cut into a length of 4-6 cm. Peel a thin layer of the ridges off leaving the hard outer layer still intact.
  2. On medium-high heat, use a deep pot, pan, or a skillet to heat the oil first. Add mustard seed. Soon it will start sizzling then add the onions, curry leaves, and give it a mix.
  3. Once the onions soften add the tamarind water, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, cumin powder, green chilli slices, the drumstick pieces and the water.
  4. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes. The water should be reduced by now and the drumstick must be softened. It takes time for the drumstick to cook well.

  5. Once it is cooked add the coconut milk and add more salt if needed. Let it cook for another 2 more minutes then take off the stove.

Very nice. I like the fact you did this Murunga recipe without using any curry powder. I had run out of curry powder so this was handy. By the way adding a Ceylon Cinnamon stick or about 1/4 tsp of Ceylon Cinnamon powder into this recipe makes it even more tasty and savory as the Cinnamon blends with all the other ingredients to create a deeper flavor.

    1. Thank you for liking my recipe and yes I’ve been wanting to try on my next Murunga dish with cinnamon. I have seen my friends add the ingredient and it does enhance the flavours. Thanks again for stopping by to comment. Love reading them.
