An easy to make fish sambal that pairs well as a side to your meals OR use it as fillings to create delicious food. Nonetheless, the sambal itself taste rich with flavours.

This fish sambal is my go-to recipe when I’m in need of a spicy filling for my pastries, or for my eggrolls. I love that it’s simple and easy to make. The end result is gonna be filled with rich flavours. I love it.

Besides lunch and dinner this is an amazing one for breakfast too. From time to time I get tired of the usual breakfast in the morning so I go for this sambal instead. It takes less than 15 minutes to make. Spread in between the bread and press it on a sandwich maker and voila!

This sambal goes just so perfect with ghee rice too. That’s all you need anyway – rice and sambal. Tickle your senses with explosions of flavour.

Did I mention that this can be made in only 15 min? More or less depending on the quantity you make.

There is so much you can do with a samba like this one. That is why it’s my all-time favourite dish. I stock up on canned tuna as much possible so that I can make this sambal as often as every week.

What else can this sambal be used for?

This fish sambal can be used for so many endless things. To name a few, it can be a side for roast paan, a good side to pair it with any flatbreads/roti (chapati, coconut-roti), and also for ghee rice or plain rice & curry.

Besides the options mentioned above, it can be used as fillings too. For pastries, sandwiches, patties, rolls, stuffed roti, and stuffed bread (malu banis) as well. It also pairs well with plain-hoppers and string-hoppers too surprisingly.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Ginger optional
  • 1 tsp garlic optional
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 & 1/2 medium-size Onions sliced
  • 1/2 small tomato diced -optional
  • 1 & 1/2 tsp Chili flakes
  • 1/2 tsp Salt or as needed
  • 1 can Flaked/Chunk light tuna 170g drain out the water
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper optional

Instructions

  1. Note – Most of the cooking is done on medium heat if at any point you get a whiff of smoke or burning smell, reduce the heat. If it looks dry add very little oil to it only if necessary.
  2. Start by using a non-stick heavy pan/pot, add the oil, curry leaves, mustard seeds, ginger/garlic, turmeric powder, onions, tomato, chilli flakes and give it a good mix.

  3. Let it cook for about 2 minutes. Give it a good mix again then cover it with a lid and let it cook for about 5-8 more minutes.
  4. Remove the lid, give it a mix and check to see if the onions are done as you like. The onions can be medium or well done, it is up to you.
  5. I always let it cook a few more minutes since I like my onions well done then I finally add the tuna fish along with the salt and black pepper powder.

  6.  Next, reduce the heat to very low and simmer for 2 minutes then remove from the stove.

Great recipe thank you. I tried this dish on Durban, South Africa while visiting a friend. His neighbout made it for us and I’ve been craving it ever since I first had it. I’ve tried making it using the ingredients I could remember but it wasnt the same. This 4ecipe is the closest result I’ve had and I’m so thankful to have found it. I’ve just tried it out and it was lovely so flavourful. I added double the amount of tuna and spices so that I could have some tomorrow too. I’m sure this samba would make a great pasta dish too. I’ll be trying that next and I look forward to trying more of your recipes.

    1. Thank you, Carmon. I am so happy to hear you enjoyed this dish. I crave this sambal often. Paired with coconut roti, tastes amazing. Now that you mentioned I gotta try it with pasta too. Thanks again and do try my other recipes. Satisfy your food cravings 🙂
