This tasty hotdog bun is a great snack for a big game day when everyone is gathered, whether it’s for grown-ups or little children, this little appetizer is popular among the crowd.
We recently watched the FIFA finals at our friend’s place and even though I’m not much of a sports fan, I do love seeing everyone come together and enjoy a great time, which I wouldn’t miss. My first thought was to make this snack for all the kids.
This will come in handy whether you are making them for a game day, birthday party, baby shower function, or any type of events. It is a great choice to choose when in need of a potluck idea.
Super easy and simple to make. Besides the time it takes to rise the dough and to bake, there isn’t much of a hard work involved trust me.
Some would point and say “That is a pig in a blanket!”. Yes, it is but normally pigs in a blanket are made with crescent rolls wrapped right..but this one is made with a simple dough recipe. Super easy to make if you have the ingredients at hand.
Let’s see how it’s made…
Gather what we need first. All-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, butter, salt, and water. Then, of course, you need hotdogs. You can get the mini, weiners, franks or the originals and cut it to the size you want. Why not try sausages it would work great. Imagine all the flavors the sausages have. An egg is also needed to get the perfect golden top at the end.
Once all the ingredients are ready, go ahead and start by combining the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a bowl and knead by adding little water at a time. Form a smooth dough at the end then cover it lightly over the dough with a towel, or cling wrap seal the bowl so that the dough will start rising in double the size. Let the yeast do its magic for 30 to 60min.
During the time it’s rising, we can get the hot dogs and the egg prepared. Eggs…all we have to do is beat an egg well and leave it aside to brush it at the end.
Take all your hotdogs. If it’s mini, you don’t have to do much…or just cut in half. If you get the long hotdogs like the franks, originals, weiners, or the sausages. Cut them up however sizes you want. I used a frank size hot dogs. I had 6 in a pack. Each cut into 6 pieces. So ended up with 36 total.
Have your baking sheets ready as well by lining it with parchment paper. Then start the making process. When the dough is ready you can separate them into 36 pieces to match the hotdogs if it helps.
I took a piece of dough, flattened it a little and inserted the piece of hot dog in the center. Folded the dough around it and pinched the ends together to close the dough all around leaving one side of the hotdog open.
You can cover all around leaving the hot dog inside as well. Another way is to half closed by the dough and half open. The half-open hot dog can be cut into 4 halfway to make it look like legs and when it bakes the ends will curve to look a little like an octopus. So there are a lot of fun creative ways you can make to look differently.
Line them all a little apart from each other and brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg. When ready bake them at 180’C/350’F for 20 to 30 minutes. Keep an eye on the top of the dough and the bottom. Rotate the hotdog buns halfway cooking to get an even bake. When the top turns into a light/medium golden color it is ready you can take off the oven and let it cool before serving them with ketchup or your favorite hot sauce.
Hotdog Bun
An easy appetizer for any kind of event, a tasty treat for any ages, especially at a potluck party where a lot of people gather to enjoy a good time.
Ingredients
- 1 and 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1 tbs Sugar
- 1 tbs Fleischmann's quick-rise instant yeast
- 2 tbs Butter
- 1 tsp Salt
- Water
- 1 pack Chicken Frankfurters big original hotdog
- 1 Egg
Instructions
-
Combine the flour, sugar, yeast, butter, and salt together. Add water little at a time and start kneading until it becomes a smooth dough. If dough turns out sticky add little of the flour to get a balance and to form a smooth dough.
-
NOTE - You may knead the dough by hand or by using a dough maker. I don't like the sticky feeling so I always have a KitchenAid dough mixer handy for these kinds of missions.
-
Once the dough is formed, cover the bowl with a cling wrap or cover lightly with a towel over the dough, leave it to rise for 30min to an hour time. At this point, the yeast will work its magic and will start to do its job. While the dough is doubling in size, you can start getting the hot dogs ready.
-
I used the jumbo size hot dog. You can use the mini hotdogs, weiners, or any flavored or size of hot dogs or sausages, they all would work just fine. So pick your hotdogs and cut it to the desired size. I had mine cut into 6 pieces each with 6 of it in the pack, so ended up making 36 total. The amount will vary depends on the hotdogs.
-
In a smaller bowl, beat an egg well and set it aside. Prepare the baking sheet with parchment paper or use a non-stick baking mat.
-
Take each piece of hot dog and wrap it up with a piece of the dough. It is up to you if you want to cover all the way around or if you want to cover only one side and leave the other side open. Be creative and wrap all the remaining hotdogs with the remaining dough. Place them all on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Just before you bake don't forget to use the already beaten eggs to brush it on top of the hotdog wrapped dough. (You may skip this step but by doing so you will not see the golden yellow crust on the top of the dough, instead, it will turn into a light brown look. Either way, the taste will still be great).
-
Bake on 180'C/350'F for 20-30min. When the top of the dough has turned to a light golden color it is time to take out of the oven. Let it cool before serving it with ketchup or hot sauce of your choice.
This recipe always comes useful for me at any time of the year. Summer holidays especially when there is a lot of people come together to have a good time. It is super easy to put together and make a big batch of it for everyone to enjoy.
Hope you all had a fabulous weekend. This summer is going great so far and even though I have a lot of housework on pending I would love to enjoy a lovely sunny day out with the family and friends. Don’t forget to make this ahead of time and have them ready for everyone to enjoy.
