Satisfying my savoury food cravings with the fresh onion-tomato sambal. Create instant vegan sambal to impress a crowd.

Onions are one of the most used veggies around the world for a reason. Find out why and how it can be useful to your health and body.

I have been craving the red onion tomato sambal recently and decided to create this old recipe my sister taught me back in Sri Lanka when we were so young. She learned it from my mom, and my mom came from a huge family of foodies.

So, this is like one of the oldest dishes I know from back home. I have made this sambal so many times without measuring the ingredients, perfecting it to my taste over the years. I realized that it wasn’t easy when it came to writing down an exact measurement of the recipe. Always going with the flow of the flavour.

But now, I’m happy that I can finally share this onion recipe in detail with my family, friends and followers to re-create to complete their meal.

HOW IS IT MADE

The red onion and tomato sambal would take about 5 minutes to make with only 5 ingredients from your kitchen. It’s super instant and easy to create.

All you need are onions, green chilli, tomatoes, lime juice and salt to taste. Anything more you add to that is optional.

On top of these ingredients, I like adding chilli flakes and chilli powder for the extra kick of spice and the Maldives fish to add a crunch flavour.

Perfect sambal to whip up instantly to impress anyone at the dinner table.

Did I mention that this recipe is not for cooking? All ingredients used here are fresh, and they each produce a variety of health benefits.

Do you cut your veggies a certain way depending on the recipe? When it comes to creating this sambal, I was taught to cut onions a certain way to achieve that burst of flavours.

At first, cut the onions in julienne style. Then turn the cut slices flat on the cutting board facing sideways to slice them thinly, lengthwise, before adding the rest of the ingredients for the sambal.

With the onions cut, tomatoes diced, and the green chilli sliced. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice and add the salt to adjust the flavours.

The next step must be done using your dominant hand (so long as they are clean). Using a spoon or other kitchen utensils is fine too, but may not bring the right flavour or the personal touch to the food as you would when handling food with your hands. So when ready…

MIX!

Using your dominant hand, crush the onions, squeeze the juice out of the tomatoes, and let the ingredients mix well first, then taste test to adjust the lime and salt before adding in on a meal.

SERVING STYLE

I use this sambal on top of air-fried seafood and meat dishes. The red onion tomatoes with the green chillies can really bring out a spicy kick with a zesty flavour to the fried dishes.

It’s amazing on hotdogs, burgers, and on tuna sandwiches too.

The best way to serve is with some of the island food like the pittu, milk hoppers, mung beans, milk rice, sweet potatoes, cassava root, coconut roti, and chappati roti.

Why not try it on nachos or for tacos. I have to try the tacos next time. What are you guys going to have this sambal with?
