the story behind the idea

Some of my old friends were getting together and we decided to have a potluck. It’s a fun way to try different food made by each of my friends. I was in charge of bringing an appetizer. I totally forgot about it with the flu going around in the family. It was extremely cold that morning and I didn’t have the car so running to the store was not an option. I was out of ideas I had to come up with something good real fast that day.

I took a look inside the fridge and what I did find was jalapeno flavoured cream cheese and the pickled jalapeno slices in a jar. Seeing them together I got an idea… Jalapeno Poppers! that could work.

The cream cheese that I already had came as flavoured with jalapeno pieces but I combined spices to bring in a little more flame because my jalapeno slices were pickled.

All I had to do was stuff the prepared cream cheese into each jalapeno slices. The messy part was the dipping. I first had to coat it in with all-purpose flour, then into eggs, then into breadcrumbs in order to seal it all closed. I had to freeze it for an hour before I started to deep-fry them little at a time.

It came out with a crispy crust on the out and the inside loaded with rich flavoured cream cheese and a hint of spice wrapped in with the jalapeno slice. When I bit in half the creaminess of the cheese inside just popped right out, dripping little from the side. It was too delicious. Jalapeno poppers are just so heavenly.

Ingredients

  • 30 Jalapeno slices*
  • Cream cheese* as needed
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 cup All purpose flour
  • 1 beaten Egg
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs*
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. *Jalapeno – I’ve used the store-bought thickly sliced pickled jalapeno for this recipe but you may go with fresh jalapeno or the pickled whole jalapeno as well. Pickled jalapeno isn’t too spicy compared to the fresh. If your working with fresh jalapenos I recommend that you remove the seeds to lessen the spice.
  2. *Cream cheese – I used the jalapeno flavoured cream cheese, you may use any other flavoured or the original cream cheese. Add cheddar, mozzarella, even Havarti cheese if you like for added flavour.
  3. *Breadcrumbs – Any breadcrumbs would do but Italian flavoured or Panko breadcrumbs are recommended.

How its made

  1. First flavour the cream cheese. You may skip this step if you like your cheese to be as is. I added chilli powder to spice up a little, you may add black pepper powder, chilli flakes, even chopped up green chillies/jalapenos or any other spices that may help bring the flavour you’re going for. Once ready set it aside.
  2. Before you start on the messy work, have everything prepped and ready. I prepared a cutting board to work on, had everything ready in place so that I can easily reach them.
  3. First off, sprinkle a layer of flour on the board to avoid any stickiness. Place the jalapeno slice over it and carefully fill in the cream cheese in the middle and over it if you like.
  4. Next, dip that in the flour, coat well then dip it in the beaten egg, turn carefully to cover the egg around it well. Then to the breadcrumbs. Repeat this until everything is done. Make sure they are all well dipped and covered otherwise it will crack and the cream cheese will leak when deep frying.
  5. You may deep-fry these poppers but I had these pan-fried instead (fried half side of the poppers at a time). You may bake it as well (350’F for 15-20min or more until they turn into a golden brown colour).
  6. Best served while it is still warm with your fav dipping sauce.

As much as I love these jalapeno poppers I never once made them before. The store-bought frozen poppers I made don’t count and they weren’t as good. I always wanted to make these but whenever I crave them we end up ordering instead.

That day when I needed a quick solution for a potluck idea, I went for it bravely working with what I had at the time and I gotta say it surprised me how perfect it tuned out.

What is a perfect jalapeno poppers taste like really?

It is made with fresh or pickled jalapeno and cream cheese mainly. Some like to season there cheese with heavy flavours and added cheddar cheese, some like it light and creamy. Some poppers are just plain jalapeno and cream cheese wrapped in with bacon to hold everything together but then the one I love is covered in a layer of breadcrumbs. These days many bake instead of deep-frying them. Really what you see and taste in a jalapeno poppers is all on your liking.

So don’t be afraid to play with flavours and make your own signature jalapeno poppers to impress your loved ones.
