Gotu kola is a small perennial plant that also goes by the name Pennywort, Centella Asiatica, and Tiger Herb. Many may not be as familiar with it but from where I came from Gotu Kola is a common green to use as a salad, sambol or to use in our herbal porridge.

I grew up having Gotu Kola almost every other week. Even before knowing its benefits, this salad became my most favourite greens to add to my rice and curry.

One power-packed herb!

Many consume them in different ways but I love it to use it as salad to go with my rice. Pairing it with a bowl of red rice and rasam or a plate of rice and fish curry would be the PERFECT Sunday meal.

I for one LOVE Gotu Kola. It’s super quick and easy to make. Tastes delicious with a touch of zestiness and has a spicy kick to it. I can never get enough of it.

This probably is why most think I look too young for my age. I consume too much of it and often since childhood. I don’t know if that’s good or bad but it’s great for my skin and loving all its benefits.

Gotu Kola Recipe

Lower your stress level, improve your skin, and slow down your age with this power-packed Gotu Kola. Try this recipe to improve your health and beauty.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Servings 4 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch Gotu Kola finely sliced/chopped
  • 1 medium-size Red onion chopped
  • 3 Thai Chili chopped
  • 1/3 cup Coconuts freshly grated
  • 1/2 tsp Salt or as needed
  • 1/2 Lime squeezed
  • 1 tbsp Maldives Fish optional

Instructions

  1. Clean the Gotu Kola leaves by letting it sit for 5 min in lukewarm saltwater then washing it off. This help removes bacteria, bugs, and any dirt or dust that's lingering on the plant. Repeat the washing if needed.

  2. Gather and cut the necessary ingredients.

  3. In a deep wide enough bowl, combine and mix the cut Gotu Kola, onions, green chilli, and the fresh coconuts as well as the Maldives fish if adding.

  4. Add lime and salt to taste at the end. Combine everything well then serve while it's still fresh.
