Set Up Your Food Blog: How to Write a Blog Post That Ranks (Beginner‑Friendly Guide)

If you’ve been keeping up with the Set Up Your Food Blog series… by now, you would have built your foundation — your niche, your domain, your hosting, your theme, your plugins, learned the basic SEO, and created your essential pages. Phew… your food blog is just about ready!

Now comes the part you’ve been waiting for: Writing your very first blog post.

And not just any post — a post that’s helpful, searchable, and written in a way that Google and your readers will love.

If writing feels intimidating, don’t worry. You don’t need to be a “writer.” You just need to be yourself — a cook with a story, a recipe, and something worth sharing.

Let’s walk through it step by step.

Before You Write: What Should Your First Blog Post Be About?

Most new food bloggers think their first post has to be a recipe. But here’s the truth:

Your first post should be something useful, searchable, and easy to write. Here are beginner‑friendly ideas:

✔ A simple recipe you make all the time

Think: egg, veggies, healthy bowls, quick weeknight meals.

✔ A “how‑to” cooking tip

Examples:

  • how to cook eggs perfectly
  • how to manage the kitchen on busy weeks
  • how to store ingredients like onions and potatoes

✔ A helpful kitchen guide

Examples:

  • pantry staples for basic cooking
  • beginner grocery list for new cooks
  • essential spices for everyday meals

These types of posts are easier to write, easier to rank for, and easier to build confidence with. Don’t overthink it — choose something you already know well.

Step 1: Start With a Keyword

Long‑tail keywords = your best friend as a new blogger. Pick one keyword and build your post around it.

Example:

Don’t → “boiled eggs”
Do → “quick & easy way to boil eggs”

Step 2: Write a Helpful Introduction

Your intro should:

  • explain what the post is about
  • include your keyword naturally
  • be short and friendly

Example:

If you’re craving eggs, you can make this egg recipe in under 30 minutes, this is going to be your new go‑to recipe for lunch.

Step 3: Use a Clear Blog Post Structure

Google loves structure. Readers love structure. You will love structure. Here’s a beginner‑friendly outline you can follow:

1. Short intro: Why this recipe or topic matters.

2. Ingredients or tools: Keep it simple and scannable.

3. Step‑by‑step instructions: Use short sentences + bullet points.

4. Tips, variations, or substitutions: This helps your post rank for extra keywords.

5. Recipe card (if it’s a recipe): Use WP Recipe Maker or a similer plugin for SEO.

6. Internal links: Link to other posts in your blog.

7. A warm closing: Encourage readers to try it or comment.

Step 4: Add Internal Links (SEO Gold)

Internal links help Google understand your site and keep readers exploring.

For your first post, link to some of your essential pages where it fits naturally.

When you populate your blog with atleast three or more blog posts it becomes easier for internal linking.

Step 5: Add Beautiful, Optimized Images

Use visuals that are:

  • bright, natural lighting
  • close‑ups
  • step‑by‑step shots (optional)

And don’t forget:

  • rename your image before uploading
  • add alt text
  • compress the file size

Step 6: Add Your Meta Title + Description

This shows up on google results when someone searches for a specific keyword that your using. Your SEO plugin (RankMath or Yoast) will guide you.

Keep it:

  • short
  • keyword‑rich
  • helpful

Example:

Meta Title:
Quick & Simple Egg Noodles Recipe | Easy 20‑Minute Meal

Meta Description:
Make this quick egg noodle recipe in under 20 minutes. Simple ingredients, beginner‑friendly steps, and delicious flavor.

Step 7: Hit Publish (Yes, Really — It’s Safe!)

Publishing your first post is a big moment, but if you’ve been following along this series your website is NOT public yet.

When you install WordPress through Bluehost, your website automatically stays in “Coming Soon” mode until you manually launch it. That means:

  • no one can see your posts just yet
  • your pages are hidden from public
  • Google can’t index anything for now
  • you can publish freely without pressure

So hitting “Publish” right now doesn’t mean your recipe or blog post is suddenly out in the world. You’re simply building your site behind the scenes — like prepping ingredients before you start cooking.

I highly recommend following this entire series step‑by‑step and saving your official “Launch” for the very end. That way, when you finally flip the switch, your blog will look polished, intentional, and ready for readers.
