  • 3 ½ tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1 large egg 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce for vegan-friendly option
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cocoa powder
  • Food coloring

Method

Make the batter
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
Color the batter
  1. Divide the batter into several small bowls.
  2. Leave one portion plain for filling larger areas.
  3. Mix cocoa powder into a small amount of batter to create a darker outline color.
  4. Add food coloring to the remaining bowls and stir until evenly colored.
Prepare your bottles
  1. Transfer each color into a squeeze bottle, piping bag, or zip-lock bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
  2. This gives you better control when drawing your designs.
Cook the pancake
  1. Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
  2. Lightly grease the surface if needed.
  3. Start by drawing the outlines of your design using the cocoa-colored batter.
  4. Add the colored details inside the outlines.
  5. Fill the remaining spaces with the plain batter.
  6. Let the pancake cook until bubbles begin forming on the surface and the edges look set.
  7. Carefully flip and cook the other side until lightly golden.
  8. Repeat with the remaining batter. Serve warm with syrup, fruit, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, or your favorite toppings.
