The kids love it when I take the extra step when plating their pancakes. This time I took an extra step in creating designs on the pancake and it turned out to be so much FUN.
Combine Food and Art!
Creating food art turned out to be a little challenging at first I won’t lie, but with a few attempts at making silly doodles, I finally got the hang of it and ended up having fun making shapes, letters, and cartoon pictures.
This is a great kid-friendly recipe. The kids had a blast of fun eating, they wanted to do the cooking next time, creating food art.
I didn’t have to cut out berries or do any extra special touches. The meal really impressed them. My art, on the other hand, can use some improvements though.
Create pancake art without the squeeze bottle.
The squeeze bottle makes it so much easier to create pancake arts. You got full control over the flow of the batter, easy to use and mess-free too.
To replace that, empty ketchup or mustard bottles work just as great, however, when I am out of the best options, either the piping bags or the ziplock bags are ready for the rescue.
I used the ziplock bags to fill it with the pancake batter. Take one end of the bag edges to make a tiny cut. Always starts with the tinies cut and test it out to see if it is big enough for the batter to flow through. If the cut is too small you can always cut it bigger to control the batter.
To cook the pancakes on, I like to choose the electric griddle over the non-stick pan because of all the space it gives for creativity, but the nonstick pan would work just fine too.
Colour it!
After making the pancake batter, divide them as many you like to colour. I suggest dividing it into 3 at first. One plain, one combined with cocoa powder and the last one can be made into 2-3 colours of your choice.
After mixing the colours into the separated batters, use one of the chosen methods to fill them. With the one squeeze bottle I had, I filled it with the chocolate pancake batter. Which I used as an outline for my artwork.
To make pancake art without the squeeze bottle, use ziplock bags. Fill the coloured batters in, zip it, turn to one corner end of the bag to make a small tiny cut. Use a glass to hold the batter bags.
The coloured batter became the fillers/details for my artwork. Then the regular pancake batter is left for any other filling that needs to be done for the finishing touches.
Get creative!
When you start to create, most of the time, the first one tends to get messy but as you go you will get the hang of it.
It’s safer to stick with shapes, letters, and simple things at first and as you get confident, start creating anything you like.
The best part is when you flip them to reveal your finished creativity… then you get to indulge in it. Satisfying your sugar cravings.

Pancake Art Recipe | Step by step for beginners
Learn how to make pancake art without the squeeze bottle. It's the kind of breakfast we can fall in love with. Satisfy your sugar cravings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 1 and 1/2 tbsp Baking powder
- pinch Salt
- 2 and 1/3 cups Milk
- 3 and 1/2 tbsp Butter
- 1 large Egg
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp Cocoa powder
- Food colouring
Instructions

Heat the electric griddle at temperature 375'F or on medium heat if using a non-stick pan over a stovetop. If pancakes are cooking too fast to catch up, lower the heat a little to slow it or adjust accordingly.

Beat the wet ingredients first (egg, butter, milk, and vanilla) then mix in the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt). Combine to get a consistency of a batter without any lumps.

Separate the batter into 3 parts. One part for the filling, one part with cocoa powder mixed for the outline. The last part can be used to mix colours you like.

Have them filled into separate ziplock bags, zip them tight and then make a small tiny cut at the corner edge of the bag. Use a glass to hold the pancake batter bags.

When the electric griddle or the non-stick pan is heated, use the chocolate pancake batter to outline a picture of your choice. Give it a few seconds to let it set.

Use coloured pancake batter to add other details. Again give it a few seconds to let it set.

Use the plain batter to fill out any places that need a filling or pour it over to bind all the details together.

When bubbles start appearing more, get a peek under to see if it has turned to a golden shade.

Flip the pancake design carefully to cook the other side too. Wait until it has turned to a golden shade before taking it off the heat.

NOTE – The colours may appear duller because it comes out cooked. Try a brighter shade or neon colours to light up those pancakes arts.
Party Food Ideas
I made dollar-size pancakes to create mini pancake towers for one of my kids’ birthdays last year. Used toothpick to keep them all secured in place. Top it with a berry or use bananas in between pancakes to make a tastier tower.
